Ceramic Platter

Ceramic Platter

"Platters" is a terminology that refers to those items that food is served from and in some instances prepared on as well. Needless to say, numerous options exist when it comes to purchasing platters. This also has the tendency to make buying decisions somewhat challenging and frustrating. Whether you purchase your platters online or at a local retailer, you need to be aware of all choices in the marketplace today.

Although most individuals do not consider serving platters as an essential part of their dishes and table setting, they are considered extremely versatile and second in functionality only to serving bowls. Serving platters can be utilized for a variety of uses but most importantly they are used for the following reasons:

- casual everyday serving of bread, burgers, or fruit, as an example
- Thanksgiving turkey or Christmas ham
- special events such as weddings or parties for serving desserts and refreshments

It is safe to say that most people today do not always have the resources to purchase a complete set of dinnerware which includes those additional matching items. They tend to purchase these items piecemeal. This is especially the case where serving platters and other Serveware items are the focal points of a person's tableware setting are concerned.

A good rule of thumb is that you should purchase at least a serving platter, a serving bowl, and the necessary serving utensils when you initially set out to establish your dinnerware set. Manufacturers are extremely notorious for discontinuing dinnerware product lines. So if you want your dinnerware and serving platter to match, you should consider adding this to your initial purchase. Despite the issue here, we are not saying that everything has to be a perfect match - there is no hard and fast rule for that.

Composition and Maintenance of Platters

Platters are manufactured in a wide array of materials, all of which are very different in composition. Additionally, certain materials are more advantageous to purchase and use than others. The event or occasion that platters are being used for will typically determine what material you want it manufactured from. The following five materials are the most common ones used today in dinnerware manufacturing and the same holds true when you are considering the purchase of any serving platters:

Durable plastics (e.g. melamine resin)
Earthenware
Glass
Porcelain
Stoneware

Follow the manufacturer's instructions to the letter. These are normally located on the item's packaging and inform you of the care and maintenance necessary where that item is concerned. Most serving platters today are designed for the presentation and serving of a particular dish and belong on your dining table. They are normally not designed to be used in the oven or on your stove top.

However, if they were manufactured in that manner, this it will be designated with words such as "microwave and oven safe" somewhere on the item's packaging. When all else fails, always read what is printed on the packaging so you are aware of proper usage.
